India crossed a million tractors in a single year in FY2025-26 — 11.6 lakh wholesale dispatches and 10.5 lakh retail registrations recorded by FADA, growth of about 23%. Almost none of those were big machines. Around 98% of tractors sold here are under 50 HP, and the 41 to 50 HP band alone accounts for close to two-thirds of the market. That is the shape of Indian farming: five to twenty acres, mixed cropping, a rotavator, a cultivator, a trolley and a thresher to run. Why 41 to 50 HP dominates

Two-thirds of Indian tractor buyers land in the 41 to 50 HP band, and it is not fashion. Fifty horsepower is roughly the point at which a tractor can run a 6-foot rotavator through dry stubble, pull a nine-tyne cultivator in black cotton soil, drive a multi-crop thresher at steady revs and haul a loaded five-tonne trolley to the mandi without changing down on every rise. Below 40 HP you start compromising on at least one of those. Above 55 HP you are paying for capacity that a fifteen-acre holding will not use, plus more diesel per hour.

The 31 to 40 HP band has been shrinking as buyers trade up. The reason is custom hiring. A farmer who intends to rent his tractor out on rotavator or thresher work needs the implement capacity that only comes at 45 HP and above, and a machine that earns off-season is a different investment from one that only works your own land.

PTO horsepower is the number that matters

Engine HP sells tractors; PTO HP does the work. Transmission losses vary a lot between makes. A Powertrac Euro 50 delivers 45.6 PTO HP from 50 rated, while a VST Shakti 932 DI delivers 24 from 32. Choose your implements against the PTO figure, never the badge on the bonnet.

Lift capacity decides your implement list

Hydraulic lift is where buyers get caught out. A 50 HP tractor with 1450 kg of lift and a 50 HP tractor with 2000 kg of lift are not the same machine. The second will handle a mounted disc harrow, a heavy rotary tiller or a laser leveller frame; the first will sag. If you already own implements, weigh them and buy against that number.

Two-wheel drive or four

Most tractors sold in India are 2WD, and for dry-land tillage and haulage that is the right choice — simpler, cheaper, less to service. Four-wheel drive earns its premium in wet paddy, on sloping ground, in orchards where you turn constantly on irrigated soil, and with front loader work.

What to check before you sign

Ask for the warranty period and the hour cap in writing, since cover in this market ranges from 1 year to 6 years and the difference is worth more than most accessories. Find out where your nearest workshop is and whether it stocks gearbox and hydraulic parts. A tractor 60 km from its dealer is a tractor that waits.

For ten acres of mixed cropping, 45 to 50 HP is the practical answer. That gives you enough PTO power for a 5 or 6-foot rotavator and a thresher, and enough pulling power for a nine-tyne cultivator and a loaded trolley. Going below 40 HP means slower work; going above 55 HP mostly means more diesel.
