The 744 FE earns its place on weight and hydraulics. At 2060 kg it plants its rear wheels where a lighter 50 HP tractor scrabbles, and the 2000 kg ADDC lift with a dual remote valve means a laser leveller or a happy seeder behaves properly instead of bouncing. Swaraj also quotes a 400-hour service interval and six years of cover, which for a contractor means fewer workshop days in a season. Our warning is about which variant you buy. The base gearbox is sliding mesh. That means stopping to change gear, on every headland, all season, and if you are running a trolley on tar it will wear you down. Pay for the partial constant mesh 12F+3R version; it is the difference between a tractor you tolerate and one you enjoy. Note too that our data has no PTO horsepower figure for this model, and 188 Nm from 3307 cc is less torque than Mahindra pulls from a smaller 2979 cc engine.
