Our verdict: Mahindra 475 DI XP Plus

Our view is that the 475 XP Plus is bought for refinement rather than power, and you should be clear about that before you sign. What you get is the smoothest engine in its price band, a 55 litre tank that lasts a full working day, and six years of warranty cover, which is a real reduction in risk on a machine that will be worked hard from year one. What you give up is PTO power. At 39.2 HP it will run a five-foot rotavator all day but a seven-footer in heavy soil will make it work, and threshing wheat with a big drum will be slower than on a 47 HP tractor. The 1500 kg lift is adequate rather than generous. And the four-cylinder engine costs a little more to service than a three-pot: four injectors, four sets of valve clearances, marginally more oil. If you are within ten thousand rupees of the 575 DI XP Plus budget, take the extra three horsepower. If the 475's price is your ceiling, this is the better-built tractor at that money, and its long service intervals will not punish you.
