The power tiller is the working machine of small, wet and awkward land. In West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, coastal Andhra and the hill districts, holdings are often under two acres, plots are separated by bunds and fields stay saturated through the paddy season. A wheeled tractor sinks there; a two-wheel walk-behind tiller does not. Where a two-wheel machine beats a tractor
Standing water is the clearest case. In a puddled paddy field a tractor's rear wheels sink and smear, and getting it out costs you a day. A walk-behind tiller works the same ground on a single axle with cage wheels and keeps going. Terraced hill fields are the second case: many are reached only by a footpath and a bund gap, and a tiller can be walked in where nothing else fits.
The third case is scale. Under two acres, a tractor never earns its purchase price. A 15 HP tiller at ₹1.65 to ₹2.85 lakh does the tillage, and for haulage you hire a tractor for the few days a year you need one.
Where it does not beat a tractor
Anything involving distance, weight or a full day of work. A tiller has no seat — you walk behind it, holding handlebars, for as long as the job takes, and in May heat that is a genuine limit on hours worked. It has no three-point linkage, so the implement range is fixed to what the maker offers. It will not pull a five-tonne trolley to the mandi. And on dry, hard-set land it is slow: a 45 HP tractor with a 5-foot rotavator will finish in a fraction of the time.
There is also a price overlap that catches buyers out. The KMW Mega T 15 at ₹2.85 lakh costs about the same as the Captain 200 DI four-wheel tractor at ₹2.94 lakh. If your land is dry and reachable, the tractor is the better machine for that money.
Choosing horsepower
Four to five horsepower, like the Honda FJ500, is a garden and vegetable-row tool: weeding, shallow tilling, nursery beds, polyhouse floors. It cannot prepare a field.
Thirteen to fifteen horsepower is the field-work class. Can a power tiller pull a trailer?
