Captain’s Indian 280 4WD belongs to the 28 HP range, but it is not the same engine configuration as the 283 4WD. The 280 product table specifies two cylinders and 1290 cc. That difference is more useful for identifying the delivered machine than assuming that similar bonnet numbers mean interchangeable specifications.

Resolve the gearbox wording before ordering

The manufacturer lists water cooling and 2500 rpm rated engine speed, and its feature section explicitly describes sliding-mesh gears. The price portal instead says synchromesh and has inconsistent power wording. This guide follows the manufacturer for the gearbox and 28 HP rating; ask the authorised dealer to put the supplied gearbox in writing. The portal is used for the attributed price reference, not to override the maker’s specification.

Oil-immersed brakes, a differential lock and ADDC hydraulics are also identified on the product page. These are features to verify, not a specification of every implement the tractor can operate. Ask for a working-speed chart and the correct shifting procedure for the ordered tyres and transmission. Do not ask a demonstrator to prove smoothness with a shift the manual forbids.

Compare the complete cultivation package

For repeated cultivation, identify the tool width, depth and soil condition before choosing the tractor. For PTO work, obtain the attachment’s required shaft speed and power separately from engine HP. A 4WD badge cannot compensate for the wrong driveline or an excessive loaded attachment. Use the implement guide to organise the supplier’s confirmation.

A useful comparison with the 283 is therefore the delivered controls, permitted operating speeds, attachment match and service support, not a claim that one cylinder count must consume less fuel. Keep the 280 DX 2WD offer separate from this 4WD quotation.

Indian price and ordering

TractorKarvan lists ₹4,68,000–₹5,08,000 ex-showroom for this named variant, checked 19 October 2026. Treat this as an indicative India-wide portal range, with no district specified, not an on-road quotation. Ask for the chosen equipment, applicable insurance, registration, freight and accessories to be itemised in a dated local offer. Optional equipment is not automatically included in the range.
