The difference between this and the standard JIVO 225 is about ₹31,000 and a front axle that pulls. That sounds like a small thing until the first monsoon week, when a 2WD mini tractor with a mounted sprayer sits spinning on a wet grape row and this one walks out. Same 1366 cc twin, same 18.4 HP at the PTO, same 2300 mm turning circle, but the drive going to all four wheels changes where you can take it. Pomegranate blocks on sloping ground in Solapur, coconut and areca gardens where the soil never fully dries, terraced plots in the hills, paddy inter-cultivation. Torque is quoted at 66.5 Nm. The buyer is usually someone who already tried a 2WD mini on this land and got stuck, or someone whose land tells them plainly they will.

Our verdict: Mahindra JIVO 225 DI 4WD

Our view is that if you are buying a JIVO at all, and your land is anything other than flat and dry, this is the one worth stretching to. ₹4.63 lakh to ₹4.78 lakh is roughly seven percent over the 2WD, and four-wheel drive at 20 HP is rare enough in India that the premium is honest rather than opportunistic. Oil-immersed disc brakes and power steering are standard. The five-year cover carries over. Now the criticism. Mahindra kept the sliding-mesh 8F+4R gearbox, and at ₹4.7 lakh a constant-mesh box would not have been an unreasonable expectation; the Kubota NeoStar has one, though it costs a great deal more. The fuel tank drops to 22 litres from 24, which on a full day of spraying means an extra stop. Lift stays at 750 kg, so the front axle has not bought you any more implement capacity. And 4WD on a light tractor is traction, not weight; if your real problem is that the machine is too light to pull a two-bottom plough, four driven wheels will not fix that. Buy it for grip, not for draft.
